Nodes

The basswood topography explores the concept of nodes and intersections. The intention was to design a compromise between the natural unpredictability of the pine needles and a standard system that would connect the individual modules. Each module is formed using six arbitrarily curved basswood stick that are connected at a node. The sticks intersect with each other, often meeting to form a new node, allowing the individual units to join and create a larger whole. The wire model takes on a more structural and systematic form in order to balance the random nature of the basswood curves, while also emphasizing their nodes and intersections. The triangular prisms encompassing the basswood nodes are made out of three wire trusses. These prisms function as a new system nodes and allow for three more trusses to branch off from each side in different directions and connect to another node, a similar pattern to that of the basswood.
